Dental Hygiene and Periodontal Health

Each time you have your teeth cleaned, in addition to the thorough cleaning, polishing and examination of your teeth, we also take the time to assist our patients by developing individualized oral hygiene habits and routines they can use at home to keep their teeth healthy.  Dr. Murdoch and our hygienist, will also make suggestions for preventative measures such as fluoride, sealants or night guards (to help with TMJ problems).   If it is determined that you are suffering from gingivitis or a more severe gum disease, we may recommend Root Planing and Scaling (RP&S) to help prevent bone loss and help you keep your teeth.

Oral Cancer Screenings

During your dental exam, Dr. Murdoch will check your neck and oral tissues for any abnormalities or suspicious areas.   Screening for early changes in the oral tissue can help detect cancer at a stage when it can be more successfully treated.  Oral cancer screening is recommended annually, just as a PAP test for women or a PSA test for men.  Smoking, especially when combined with heavy alcohol consumption, is the primary risk for oral cancer today.  This lethal combination is estimated to be responsible for about 75% of the oral cancer diagnosed in the United States.

Root Planing and Scaling (RPS)

Root planing and scaling is a non-surgical procedure that removes plaque and tartar that is below the gum line.  Root surfaces are cleaned and smoothed.  It is crucial that plaque and tartar be removed from the pockets below the gum line.  Removing the bacterial toxins that cause gum irritation will help keep your teeth and gums healthier.
